Meet Bryan

Senior Interactive Designer Bryan was born in Tennessee, raised in Ohio, and made in New York. After five years in NYC followed by six in upstate New York (Troy) he and wife Julie contemplated another move, this time to a number of cities scattered across the country, including: Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland and Seattle. Lucky for us, Minneapolis won (as it should!) They arrived in the City of Lakes, had a son, Milo, and are happier than ever.

Bryan has spent the past 14 years designing print, branding and interactive solutions for clients such as Cobra-PUMA Golf, Nikon, Scholastic, Colgate-Palmolive, PBS and The Cleveland International Airport (just to name a few). He came to us from Sevnthsin, where he was Senior Designer for accounts including Bon Iver, HealthPartners and American Public Media. We’re psyched to have him on board. He doesn’t know it yet, but we’re already arguing over who gets the first ride in his kickass scooter’s sidecar.

What do you want to be remembered for?
Positively affecting lives, contributing to a greater good and excellent carnitas.

The first website I check everyday is:
If I care about the weather: forecast.io
If I don’t: Notcot.org

Song of the moment:
Appetites: Les Savy Fav

Reading anything interesting?
I have a short attention span so I’ve partially just read: Last Call (The History of Prohibition), a Dieter Rams book and Pulphead: Essays by Jeremiah Sullivan. Geek Love would be my favorite book—if you care to know. I finished that one.

Drink of choice:
Negroni

Where do you find inspiration?
I tend to observe more than I engage so I think I am cataloging a lot of information in that process that inspires my work and life. Based on that observation, I find inspiration on the bus, my scooter, at home, in music, in people and in food.

Most interesting Minneapolis observation:
At stoplights, drivers leave full car lengths between themselves and the car in front of them. I can’t comprehend that.

What is your dream project?
Solving something hugely complex and necessary. Have you ever tried to decipher medical bills and how they correlate to your insurance? Let me fix that.

I’m addicted to:
Tacos, tacos and tacos.

If I wasn’t a designer I would have liked to be:
I have told everyone I know that this is the greatest field to be in—it is truly limitless, constantly challenging and always rewarding. If I weren’t designing in this medium I would ultimately be designing in some other medium. Designing food? Designing buildings? Designing aprons for taxidermied squirrels, etc…something like that.

Your favorite musician?
A toss up between Bob Dylan and Fugazi.

Which living person do you most admire?
My wife. I don’t know anyone better and she is a constant source of inspiration for me.

Meet Jackie

Jackie is our MVP at Westwerk. She was the first employee hired and is continually the go-to on the creative side of things. Whether it’s designing beautiful logos, packaging, or websites, not much goes through here without Jackie’s input. She’s also our in-house photographer, which made shooting her profile photo difficult. See- MVP!

She grew up on a dairy farm west of Minneapolis, and studied at the University of Minnesota Duluth. A three-week trip to Italy senior year ignited a major love affair with Europe. She’s been back twice since — her last trip was a 10 country, 2 month excursion (which may explain the je ne sais quoi quality about her). When she’s not vying to hop the Atlantic, she is likely obsessing over typefaces and choosing the perfect pantone color combinations. She can’t even walk through the cheese section at the supermarket without picking up packages and commenting on the design.

What do you want to be remembered for?
Being kind, generous, and (hopefully someday) contributing something back to the world

The first website I check everyday is
Pinterest is a favorite, I’m also a fan of the animated gifs on thisadvertisinglife.com

Favorite song at 4pm on a Friday
Beer by Three Loco

Favorite band?
Florence and the Machine

Drink of choice
Dark & Stormy, or whatever is on tap at Westwerk

Reading anything interesting?
Bringing up Bébé … it’s about an American woman raising a child in France and the cultural differences that she observes

Favorite quote?
“I think everything in life is art. What you do, how you dress, the way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality, what you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea, how you decorate your home, or party; your grocery list, the food you make, how your writing looks, and the way you feel.

Life is art.”

Where do you find inspiration?
Travel is highly inspiring … seeing new places, trying different foods, discovering other cultures

What is your dream project?
Projects that encompass branding and digital with far-reaching applications. One of my current projects combines branding, packaging and web, which is ideal because it allows us to create a cohesive identity and see the brand through from start to finish.

I’m addicted to
Netflix and anything coconut

Currently obsessed with
Mad Men and Downton Abbey

Most influential movie of my life

Napoleon Dynamite

Secretly I can
Play the trumpet (nerd alert!)

If I wasn’t a designer I would have liked to be
A travel/humanitarian photographer

Best advice you’ve received
Money is a renewable resource; time is not

On the weekends, I can usually be found
Tooling around uptown, cycling the lakes, practicing yoga
